Have you ever poured aceite household oildown the kitchen sink? Many people, ignoring the consequences of such an act, do it every day. What they should know is that this causes serious damage to shared water systems and can affect health in general.
The problem can be even worse in homes located in areas with little slope. Oil mixed with soap forms a very hard plug that can end up obstruir la red of pipes of the house or building where we live. The consequence is quite costly because, afterwards, it will be necessary to locate where the blockage is, lift the flooring and repair the pipe.
Just as it is advisable not to dispose of oil through kitchen sinks, the recommendation also extends to toilets.
Oil, a highly polluting substance
The polluting power of oil, like that of soap, is high and causes serious environmental problems, as it is one of the main causes of water pollution in our country. Oil forms a film that does not let oxygen through and, if any bird lands on it, its wings become coated with it and it cannot fly, inevitably leading to death.
For this reason, all households are advised to act exactly as restaurants do: they should store used oils in tightly closed containers and, once full, take them to clean collection points in their town or city.
However, some municipalities have found small solutions to deal with this major problem. In La Laguna (Cádiz), oil no longer pollutes the water because it is channelled to the treatment plant and separated directly from the water. A very costly solution which, however, should not detract from the need to avoid disposing of household oil through our kitchen sinks or bathroom toilets.
