Stainless steel sinks kitchen sinks have never gone out of fashion and it remains one of the most widely used materials for their manufacture, together with synthetic materials, glass or ceramic. However, stainless steel is not only limited to sinks or appliances but also to surfaces such as worktops, whose use we normally associate with industrial-style kitchens.
But what advantages and disadvantages does installing a stainless steel worktop in a conventional kitchen entail? What decorative possibilities does it offer? And how do we maintain this type of material so that it always looks in perfect condition?
Let’s see!
Decorative possibilities of stainless steel worktops
Within the group of worktops made of stainless steel we find various types of finishes that we can adapt to the main decorative idea we have for our kitchen.
Thus, we have different possibilities:
- Satin-finish steel, very similar to that used in appliances.
- Vibrated steel, which scratches easily.
- Polished steel, very shiny and difficult to keep looking like the first day over time.
- Aged steel, the one most used and seemingly setting a trend. The downside? It does not resist scratches and knocks well.
- Coloured steel, although be careful, in many cases the fact that it is coloured means that steel is not used but copper, cement or plastic.
Pros and cons of installing steel worktops
One of the main advantages of stainless steel worktops is that this type of material is very resistant to high temperatures and this does not affect the colour of the steel at all. However, its water absorption is very low, as is its resistance to knocks (these are visible to the naked eye and scratches only disappear with the use of a polish, if they are not deep).
Maintenance of the steel worktop
Consequently, we should always make sure to dry the worktop well with a soft cloth so that no water marks remain on it. We should also avoid the use of scouring pads.
In addition, we should avoid the use of bleach or other degreasing products, as these tend to remove the shine from the steel.
Therefore, if we have a retro idea for our kitchen whose main material is stainless steel, we must bear all these tips in mind and think that this retro effect may fade over time. If that happens, why not combine steel with another type of material?
