The most widely used materials in modern kitchens

Some may remember kitchens covered with our grandmothers' cold white marble worktops. Fortunately, times change and the materials used today have nothing to do with those dull ones: warm ceramic worktops, synthetic sinks, multifunction tapsand even rustic furniture.

These are some of the materials currently used in the design of modern kitchens, which are considered another room in the house and are often integrated into the dining room itself.

Many current kitchens are made up of islands designed with smooth-surface worktopsflat and highly resistant to knocks, burns and cuts. The material of these worktops is no longer traditional granite or marble but the so-called Corian by Dupont, a type of material with a long lifespan made up of aluminium hydroxide and liquid resin.

Floor and wall finishes are usually covered with porcelain stoneware which is characterised by its great resistance. Unlike the tiles of the past, today's tiles are dry-pressed and manufactured in the same firing.

As for furniture, many kitchens with little space are dressed today with neutral-coloured furniture and with a lacquered finish that manages to give a feeling of spaciousness. Likewise, synthetic materials are also taking centre stage, as is wood – whether natural or laminated. Another trend that is becoming quite common should also be highlighted: the use of handleless cabinets whose aim is to integrate them into the space.

As for sinks, as we already know, materials are also very varied and are no longer limited to the stone ones of old kitchens. Today we can choose synthetic kitchen sinks in various colours, stainless-steel sinks, glass or ceramic sinks.

Whatever the case, today's kitchens no longer convey the coldness of the past, but the warmth of a home adapted to the new times.
