Open or closed kitchen? That is the dilemma!

Although we are discussing two options (open or closed), we must bear in mind that there is another option on the scene: the semi-open kitchen, which, just as we choose between a kitchen sink with one or two bowls, should also be valued as a feasible possibility.

The versatility of an open kitchen

The lifestyle we lead and the tasks we carry out may lead us to decide on a connection between kitchen and dining room. In this way, if we live in a small flat, we will gain spaciousness and perhaps even light.

Likewise, if our aim is to make serving between the kitchen and dining room easier, simply clearing the table quickly will save us a lot of time in unnecessary trips.

On the other hand, an open kitchen encourages participation and connection with other family members and guests because, while we cook, we can keep up a very lively conversation with them.

Finally, and in more technical terms, it should be borne in mind that a quality, powerful extractor hood is essential in an open kitchen in order to avoid unpleasant noise and odours.

Why do we hesitate over a semi-open option?

Basically because it is the best option for all those who cannot quite decide whether to have it open or closed. With a semi-open option we also get a sense of spaciousness and openness, but at the same time we have more convenience when organising meals and can close the space whenever we see fit to prevent the transfer of odours and noise.

To achieve this, all we need is a simple shelving unit, a semi-enclosure made of glass or a glass wall, with which we can create a more open-plan atmosphere. Sliding doors are another good idea, allowing us to open and close according to the occasion.

Are you more traditional? Closed kitchen!

The tradition of having a closed kitchen allows the aesthetic independence of each space and lets us hide it from the view of our guests if it is untidy and full of plates piled up in the sink.

By closing off the kitchen, there is no need to panel the appliances to disguise them, and the transfer of odours and smoke from one room to another is also much lighter.
